The European Union’s plans to cap new cars to 95g/km CO2 by 2020 has been delayed, after months of lobbying led by Germany. Instead, the 95g/km target will be introduced a year later in 2021, but with an additional amount of flexibility intended to make the transition easier – especially for luxury carmakers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which generally build bigger, heavier vehicles. The new compromise, agreed on Tuesday (26 November 2013) and set to be presented to EU diplomats on Friday (29 November 2013), changes the rules on ‘supercredits’ – which allow manufacturers claim extra credit for especially low emissions cars, such as all-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The BMW 5 Series Hybrid
As we reported in December, with a couple of days to go to the Geneva Motor Show BMW have revealed that the new BMW 5 Series (2010) will have a Hybrid added to its ranks. Actually, they haven’t said that – the 5 Series Hybrid Concept they’re taking to Geneva is labelled a Concept – but we all know it’s what they mean. The 5 Series Hybrid will join the X6 Hybrid and the 7 Series Hybrid when it goes on sale, probably in 2011.
Kia’s ‘Stunning Sports Car Concept’ is the Kia GT4 Stinger
Just before Christmas, Kia revealed the first teaser photo – a birds-eye view – of a new concept they’re taking to the Detroit Auto Show later this month, which they described as a stunning sports concept, but gave us absolutely nothing else. We did hope it may be something that points towards a proper performance Kia, although we half expected it to turn out to be a 3-pot city runaround. But actually, it looks quite promising.
